The commemorative stone on Morzinplatz – from 1938 until 1945 the Gestapo headquarters in Vienna – was built and unveiled without any official authorization in 1951 by the concentration camp association closely associated with the KPÖ (Communist Party of Austria). In the atmosphere of the Cold War and reintegration of former National Socialists, the spirit of anti-Fascism of the initial postwar period was replaced with a fervent anti-Communism so that monuments for the resist-ance against the NS-regime were oftentimes considered »Communist propagan-da«. In 1985 the City of Vienna erected a new monument on this site.
