In 1948 the memorial of the City of Vienna for the »Victims for a Free Austria 1934–1945« was unveiled at Vienna's Central Cemetery. Originally dedicated to the victims of the years 1938 until 1945, the modification of the inscription must be viewed as a result of the political conflicts regarding the assessment of the corporate state-dictatorship 1934–38. However, the monument also points out that the memory of the horrors of the NS-regime had already lost its relevance a few years after the war: the decision of the City of Vienna to build a monumental memorial in the town center has never been implemented.
