The Republic of Austria's first memorial for resistance against the NS-regime, the memorial room for the »Victims of the Fight for Austria's Freedom« was created in the Outer Castle Gate of the Hofburg (Imperial Palace) as late as twenty years after the end of war. Located in the opposite wing of the castle gate is the heroes' memorial for the military victims of World War I consecrated in 1934, which was also dedicated after 1945 to the fallen soldiers of World War II. On National Day and other official occasions wreath-laying ceremonies are held at both memorial sites.
