During the war preparations a critical labor shortage – especially in road construction – became apparent already by late 1938/early 1939. Relatively soon, therefore, the state- and party departments in charge came up with the idea to integrate the Jewish population in a forced and state-controlled manner into the production process until a »final solution to the Jewish question« had been found. Jews were now used in road construction and garbage disposal, that is, tasks with the aura of »slave labor« about them. They were in the lowest wage bracket and were only permitted to perform unskilled labor. |
