Following the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936, about 1400 Socialists, Communists, and Schutzbund members volunteered in the armed struggle on the side of the Spanish Republic. Hundreds of them paid for their service with their lives. They either fell during the Civil War or else while resisting the NS-regime, as members of the allied armies, in German concentration camps, or in Stalinist pris-ons.
