There is hardly another theme in connection with the Third Reich's construction program that has produced more myths than the construction of highways (Autobahnen). To this day it is still viewed in a positive light. Popular belief has it that Hitler not only built the highways, but also »invented« them, thus contributing to a reduction in unemployment. Plans for highways without crossroads and with double lanes in different directions were drawn up before World War I. The first German Autobahn, between Charlottenburg and Wannsee in Berlin, was officially opened in 1921. The road construction program in the Third Reich was a subject of propaganda and extended in anticipation of war to accelerate troop movements. Because of its military and strategic position, Austria was to serve as a hub for the new highway system. |
